In Memoriam -- Phil "Overbarrel"

This is sad news, but there may be somebody peeking in who needs to know.

Phil J, who signed his hilarious and highly detailed "Poser" cartoons "Overbarrel," died this weekend after a ferocious three to four year fight with ALS.

His abilities to create, to partake in life as he did so richly, and eventually even to communicate, were stripped away bit by bit by what he called "this goddamned disease."  Nevertheless, he didn't spend a lot of what energy he had in fecklessly railing against it all, like I might have done, and I think his profound, nigh-unquenchable sense of humor was a saving grace. His loving wife and family were with him, and hospice care.

Phil was a remarkable husband, father, grandfather, and a stalwart friend.  He was one who helped me out of a very dark time, and when the Internet was new, he was also one who made me understand that my particular and perhaps peculiar sexual interests were nevertheless not as deviant as I used to think.  Phil himself was as decent, intelligent, and caring a man as ever walked the planet.  We shared, across the distance via that wonderful tool, the Web, all the joys and sorrows of each other's family life, and hundreds of photos.

We also shared many a grin over twenty-plus years of goofy "Overbarrel" and "WolfieToon" creations.  Phil first learned the "Poser" program via a copy in German-- he didn't speak or read German-- and never stopped developing and getting better at it.  He had a natural movie director's eye, although he had never studied filmmaking, and many of his Poser Epics were cinematically brilliant.  Sometimes his 'toons were "copy heavy," and I occasionally made suggestions about word balloon placement, and even recommended putting the words below the pictures, à la "Prince Valiant," but he never went for it.

Phil was the most guileless and honest man I've met.  I worried about that for him in the World Of Weird Web People, but he never came to or caused any harm.  And, yeah, once in a while his ribald sense of humor got the better of him, and fantasies went off in directions I wouldn't trod, but Fantasy is one thing, Reality another, and he never, ever confused the two.

He was an exceptional raconteur, and told many stories of his childhood, military, and wedded life that I hope the family will collect and publish for a few of us.

I'm very grateful to have known Phil, and life will be a lot emptier without him.

Wolfieversary: A Gray Celebration

Well, this blog has been around for a year now, and to mark the event, I went rummaging through the old cardboard box and found some stuff nobody's seen, or at least not very many bodies:  old cartoons from Arild's Moviespanking Yahoo Group, forgotten sketches, abandoned drawings, and unfinished cartoons that I may resuscitate.  Like this one:

Here's a somewhat appropriate birthday 'toon:

Here are some undone cartoons:

"Defiance"

You heard about that group making sweaters for penguins?  Here's a couple helping some penguins warm up, too:

This woman is getting mixed signals:

Preliminary drawing for a "Discipline and Desire" cartoon:

This is the pencil version of the semi-famous Tinker Bell pic.  I don't remember if I had it up at Arild's before I did the more finished version.  Tink is less giggly here:

Warm-up type things with attitudes:

I'm pretty sure these two haven't ever been shown.  This is Wonder Woman disciplining her young protege / sister Wonder Girl, as they looked in the comics of the mid 60's.  I never chose to go back and fix the perceived problems here, but I like the attitudes:  WW's matronly demeanor, and WG's  squirming protest.  The shape of her bottom and legs I like, too.

Later, I decided maybe Wonder Girl would like a turn:

Speaking of sisterly spanking, the one below is the THE oldest WolfieToon I have.  In fact, my nosey young teenage son had found it and demanded later (trying to get my goat) "Dad, what's wrong with you, drawing little girls spanking each other?!"  I was embarrassed at the time, but I still declined to mention his own oddities.  Heh heh.

And here is the SECOND oldest cartoon in my collection.  Yes, these are fairly ugly, but they were done quickly and for no one but me at the time.

Now the THIRD oldest cartoon.  I apologize to those of you for whom F/f spanking has no appeal, but you know, I don't have a problem with it myself, says he grinning wolfishly.

This 'toon is from Arild's.  I sought to evoke the feeling of those fabled days of the early 70's when I began to have a persistent if not constant... awareness.  Sara Cherilyn gets her first spanking:

Speaking of Arild's and superheroes, here's a spot of color amid the gray:  a scene in which mild mannered Springrose dashed into a nearby phone booth* to emerge as Superspringie, only to fall prey to the evil Blitzerwolf!  Believe it or not, I had a Fairly Vanilla Friend who saw this and remarked, 'Wow, THAT doesn't look like fun!  That looks like it HURTS!!" :

(*You Younger Crowd who have never heard of a "phone booth" will just have to Yahoo it.)

A huge thank-you to all of you who have taken the time to read, to comment, to check out "Discipline and Desire" and the Lulu books!  To make hearts and bottoms warm is my joy!

LURK OUT!!

Darn near missed getting to participate in "LOVE OUR LURKERS DAY," smartly begun by Bonnie!  (She still has one of the most adorable Po Po Profile Pics I've ever seen!!  So enticingly grabbable, spankable, chompable... uh,. where was I?)

Oh, yes!  Appreciative greetings to all lurking peekers!  Here are some not-too-frequently seen old WolfieToons from "Arild's Movie Spanking Yahoo Group,"  now gone from the InterWebs.

Lurk 'em over!!

(Artie, Ar, Ar!!)

(This one is called "Mack and Beth," for no good reason at all.  Now, it would have made some sense, say if he'd been brushing up her shaked rear...Urk, sorry, Mr. Cole Porter!!)

(What do you suppose came from the young woman's temper tantrum below?  Aw, you GUESSED! )

(But, hey, look, the Machines got even!)

(This is called "Cuddly  Spanking.")

(This is the original pencil drawing... )

(And this is what came of it later... )

(Now, I don't know if he's reminding HER or HIMSELF...)

When they did "Mutiny On The Bounty" in the 30's, the one with Clark Gable and Charles Laughton, they had a scene in which young Mr. Byam threatened one of the native island girls saying, "I'll paddle your little starboard!"

Say what??  I guess they wanted him to sound like a Sailor, but even I know that means "right side."  I betcha the original line was "I'm gonna paddle your little AFT!"

Which would have been a lot funnier.  Damn Censors. OK, maybe it was, "I'm going to give your stern a spanking!"  I know for sure he said nothing about a poop deck, that's just wrong.  And shame on you for bringing it up.  Anyway, here are some other sea-faring types...

"Drink some port and list to the starboard!"-- Lou Costello, "Abbott and Costello Meet Captain Kidd," also with Charles Laughton.)

These are primitive and crude and almost never get out to play, the poor little deformed darlings.  Of course, they'll be all over the Web NOW!  So you Lucky Lurkers get to see where WolfieToons began.

Big deal, huh?

:-D

And thank you for lurking!!

WereWolfies!

And what will Wolfies wear?

The first one on screen had a jaunty cap and overcoat-- Henry Hull in "The Werewolf of London!" (1935)

I actually have similar caps!

A few years later-- 1941, to be nerdily exact-- Lon Chaney the Younger established that wolfmen wore shirts with the top button done and matching pants.

(This was the fashion that the "two" werewolves of "Dark Shadows" sported in the 60's!)

Hammer Films in the UK started remaking the monster favorites, and in 1961,  came up with "Curse of the Werewolf," putting Oliver Reed in a pirate shirt and tight black pants.  And, er, boots.  Hm.

That, by the way, is possibly the most boring of all werewolf movies.  Great makeup, sorry plot, and the werewolf doesn't show up until the last five minutes of the movie, to run along the rooftops of a Spanish village and then get killed.  I will conceed that Oliver could be scary enough without makeup.

In the early 60's, Aurora Plastics came out with the Monster Model kits.  The cover painting for the Wolf Man looked more like the Hammer version than the Universal version--

but the actual model was closer to what makeup man Jack Pierce inflicted upon Lon Chaney, Jr, except that this fella was shirtless, and more buff.  ("Buffer?")

(Yes, I built and proudly displayed all three of those;  In fact, I did Dracula and the Wolf Man twice.  My paint jobs were not nearly so professional.  And the plastic glue was really stinky, and I never understood the appeal for the kids who deliberately snorted the fumes in a bag to feel sick and dizzy.)

Nowadays, a lot of the movie werewolves go in the altogether.

However, back when we were at Arild's Movie Spanking Yahoo Group, I did a werewolfie still interested in fashion:

And later, at the Southern California Spanked Wives Club on MSN,  Wolfie went to the UK!

Spankadamy Awards 2002: Boom and More from Arild's!

That is "McWINTOCK!" starring Elmer Fudd and Betty Boop, a brilliant cartoon from the creator of O.T. Katie, hugobOOm, or bOOm for short!  (Feb 1st Edit:  To see the animated version, just left click on the pic!  I didn't know it would work that way (head slap!) so a HUGE thank you  to Devlin O'Neill!) This cartoon first showed up at "Arild's Moviespanking Yahoo Group," which I wrote about here!

Phil "Overbarrel" discovered that he had TONS of files saved from Arild's, and shared them!  He's always been one fine helluva guy!!  He also told me I got the name of the furshlugginer group wrong!  I was pretty sure "Cartoon Spanking" was the name, but Springrose agreed with Phil, and one shouldn't argue with a woman's memory!

Anyway, I've discovered, to my delight, that lots of people now, beginners as well as those who've been at it a while, love sharing their spanking artwork!  Two of the best places to see that are AnimeOTK,  and the collections at Deviantart, which, oddly enough, isn't only for us deviants!

But Arild's group was the first place I found, LO! so many years ago, and it was bOOm who came up with the idea of all the artists combining their work for Arild's "Spankadamy Awards!"

Here's bOOm's O.T. Katie taking the stage (supplied by the Poser art of Angus Old!) until my first avatar interrupts!

Then the Hostess meets "Dick Darthedly," courtesy of Angus Old and Darth!

I mentioned Darth's pencil art last time, but didn't have any to share!  Well, thanks to Phil, we have some now!

And here's some more art from Dan Rivera:  his Private Eye, "Sam Swat!"

And a comic caricature he did of our host, Arild, and Dan's character, "Spanky Sal!"

Evidently, bOOm is still creating clever O.T. Katie cartoons!  There's a link to his work at the The Chicago Spanking Review, on a page featuring the "Blondie" pastiche that he did!  Way to go, bOOm!!
