Jungle Heat!

Hey, there's a new Tarzan movie out now, "The Legend of Tarzan," and it's supposed to be pretty good!  I'll go catch the matinee this afternoon.

Saturday afternoons when I was a kid, the local TV station ran all the MGM Tarzan movies between seemingly interminable car dealer commercials with the screaming Yahoo dashing down the lot drawing prices on the car windshields.

Surprisingly, I never read the original Edgar Rice Burroughs books until I was in my late thirties.  I read the first four, and then sort of lost interest before our hero started going to lost civilizations and all that.

And yes, not to ruin the joke, but the reason Tarzan didn't have a beard is that he used his knife (which compensating tool and a loincloth he, er, acquired from a hapless passing native as a young ape-man) to shave because he'd discovered he was a different animal than his simian companions and wanted to accentuate the difference!   You can never know too much trivia, it could win you money on TV or free drinks.

There have been, of course, a world of Tarzan illustrators since the early 1900's, and my favorites include Frank Frazetta--

--Burne Hogarth

--and Joe Kubert!

Bob Lubbers drew a nice scene for the newspaper strip--

--And I'll rerun my version for any of you who haven't seen it, or maybe would like to snicker at it again!

See ya later, swingers!!

School Ends!

As the graduation season is upon us, I thought a couple of school-themed Wolfietoons would be apropos!

(Having to mention this is an admission of Cartoonist Failure, but there are three jokes going on with that li'l lab rat who is adjusting her spectacles for the spectacle.)

And the distaff class does seem intent on furthering their grasp of things.

Was the impetus for that OTK Trip the young lady's lab work or her funny fashion faux pas?

There's always something up when these Imps are around!

All of which reminds me of the quote I encountered on the Web:  "Don't just seize the day, throw it right over your lap and give it a really good spanking!"

Happy Groundhog Day!

And we're not talking pork sausage here!

Accordion to my German ancestors,

today the groundhog, also known as the woodchuck,

will peek out of his cozy groundhole, and if it's cloudy--
 Spring will come early!

But-- if Chuck sees his shadow,

Winter persists another six weeks!!.

Now, all that doesn't sound strictly scientific,

however, it did lead to two WolfieToons!

This one, for various reasons, was never published!

As a matter of fact, I don't know why it's here now.

However, I re-did the joke some time later with a better cartoon!

So enjoy the day, and if you see Bill Murray, tell him I said, "Hey."

Saturday Morning WolfieToon!!

You got your bowl of cereal, right?

Saturday Night Edit!

Lovely Larken says I should explain this for much younger women who did not watch Boy Shows, and for people from out of town, like Australia.

"Space Ghost" was a Saturday Morning action-adventure cartoon show from Hanna-Barbera (The makers of "The Flintstones," "Scooby Doo,"  "Yogi Bear," etc. etc. etc.) that began in 1966 to capitalize on "Batmania."  It combined Super Heroes, Outer Space (complete with Spaceships!), Ghosts, and Things Blowing Up.  How could that NOT be Really Cool?!  At least for the ten-year-old boys like I was and am.

Space Ghost and his two adopted teen-age assistants, the twins Jace and Jan, and their pet monkey Blip, patrolled the Galaxy in the Phantom Cruiser, keeping renegade robots, lava monsters and evil world-conquerors in line.  They could all become invisible, fly with power packs, and Space Ghost had power bands that shot out a variety of power rays.

The introduction looked like this!

Much, much later the Cartoon Network did a snarky talk show parody of snarky talk shows called "Space Ghost Coast To Coast," which I didn't usually care for.  It had its moments of absurd humor, but would they have done that to Zorro, the Lone Ranger, Superman or Batman?  I don't think so.

OK, NOW ya know!

Holiday Greetings!

'Twas the night before Christmas,
and look at that moon!
Not a creature was stirring,
they didn't have spoons!

That is a detail from the WolfieToon this week at "DISCIPLINE & DESIRE!"

Here is a peek at the whole thing and at one of the previous 'toons, which I hope will entice and not annoy.

If it does irritate, you can make this your return greeting:

Which is good for anyone tired of the strained hubbub that began in October, anyway.

But maybe you'll find something really cool under the tree, like--

"Holy Sh*t!  What ARE they thinking?!"

OK, how about:

In any case, I hope your joys and happy memories will always outweigh your grief.

Ghost Writers In The Sky!

So Larken says, "I have a cartoon you should do!"

"EeeeeYESSSsss?" I replied like the guy on Jack Benny, confusing the younger people with an obscure reference.

She told me and I Laughed Out Loud!  I would have Rolled On the Floor Laughing, but there's always stuff in the way down there.

The results are at "DISCIPLINE & DESIRE" this week!

There have occasionally been other WolfieToon writers!  In fact, "D&D" editor Reesa Roberts had a contest once, and the winners got free stuff!  This was the Third Place Entry.

My buddy who signed himself "Charlie Tunasheart" suggested several cartoons over the years, like this one:

So if you have a favorite fantasy or idea, I'm always open to suggestions.  Hope you enjoy the offerings over at "D&D" this week, too!

Kimberly's Complicated Craftsmanship

This is Kimberly Ann Thomas.  She signs her artwork "KAT."

The top of Kimberly's latest work looks like this.

There seems to be some less-than-subtle statement there.

The Top in her picture is a butthead??  Now we know the result of such a remark, spoken or graphically depicted.

But is she truly surprised or alarmed?

Anyway, you can see the whole darn thing and more at "DISCIPLINE & DESIRE!"

Plus, this week's Free Bits start Jennifer Somersby's "THE TWO CHARLEYS." and Mandy Rogers's "FIRST AND FOREVER LOVE!"

Don't be cheated by crappy fan fiction inexplicably getting national attention when you can enjoy the real deal!!

Wolfie Says.
